Importance of Calcium

  • Reduces toxic hydrogen that has many negative effects in the soil.
  • Helps yields indirectly by improving germination, root growth conditions and stimulating microbial activity, molybdenum availability, and uptake of nutrients.
  • Calcium stimulates root and leaf development, as it is required by new cells in these plant parts. Its stimulation of vigor and growth increases the intake of other essential nutrients. Ample available calcium assures normal growth and maturity.
  • Improves soil structure (floculation, water infiltration, etc.)
  • Influences yield indirectly by reducing soil acidity. This lowers solubility and toxicity of manganese, copper, and aluminum.
  • Helps to reduce the nitrates in the plant...to activate several enzyme systems...to neutralize organic acids in the plant.
  • Exerts an important role in plant nutrition as an essential element in several different capacities, one being as a structural component of cell walls produced by the lack of calcium.
  • Improves the availability of phosphorus even if no more available phosphorus has been applied, strictly because of the replacement of phosphate anions in the structure of these metal phosphate compounds and subsequent phosphate release to the soil solution for plant utilization.
  • Maintaining optimum calcium levels in turf-grass plant cells strengthens the plants resistance to disease.

Calcium Deficiency and Turfgrass Production Problems

  • The obvious poor physical characteristics of limestone.
  • Because limestone is rather insoluble, it can take years to show effect.
  • Poor seed germination.
  • Poor root development.
  • Uneven, patchy stand of grass.

The Solution

Liquid Nutri-Cal GreenTurf...the best source of soluble calcium for turf-grass and nursery soil. Nutri-Cal GreenTurf is a complex of soluble calcium and a natural organic complexing agent, T.O.G.

Nutri-Cal GreenTurf is a readily available source of calcium which provides "first season" results. Nutri-Cal GreenTurf is unique because its calcium is protected to assure availability for the soil reaction. Most other forms of calcium are tied up rather quickly, and become insoluble. Nutri-Cal GreenTurf significantly helps break down insoluble, or "trapped" lime which is already in the soil. The increase calcium improves the solubility of important turf nutrients, as well as making it easier to work up the soil through improved friability. This allows for better aeration and water movement.

Because solubility and availability are prerequisites for calcium utility in the soil, Nutri-Cal GreenTurf is the best source of calcium.

Calcium Maintenance with Nutri-Cal GreenTurf

Many factors, especially the use of nitrogen fertilizer, continually change the soil environment, often working against maintaining a neutral pH. As the pH changes, the demand for soluble calcium increases...while the supplies may be decreasing.

Liquid Nutri-Cal GreenTurf is the best source of calcium available to the turf-grass industry. Nutri-Cal GreenTurf supplies vital calcium and helps make the calcium in the soil available to the plant.

The Role of Calcium in the Soil

The most important, single characteristic of soil is the acid-alkali ratio, or soil reaction, because of its effects on several chemical and biological processes which directly influence plant development and growth. This ratio is indicated by a pH value, which defines the relative acidity of bacicity of the soil.

The nature of the soil reaction affects not only the availability of plant nutrients through the exchange system but, also the activity of micro-organisms in the nitrificationprocess and in formation of the gums and resins that bird soil particles. A major source of hydrogen is from the application of nitrogen fertilizers.

To correct the soil acidity, excessive amounts of hydrogen ions in the soil solution and on the exchange sites must be neutralized. To neutralize these, the calcium in the water soluble part of the exchange complex needs to be increased. In the past limestone was used to increase calcium levels, but now current research has developed other means to raise the available calcium levels. The instant there is more calcium in the soil solution than on the colloid, the soil colloid releases the hydrogen and attracts the calcium. ANY COMPOUND USED TO CORRECT AN ACIDIC CONDITION MUST INVOLVE CALCIUM IN THE REACTION SOME WAY.

CAUTION! The reverse of the fore mentioned process can also occur. An acid or neutral soil can become more acid if a calcium maintenance program is not followed. As basic ions such as Ca + +, Mg + + and K + are removed, usually replaced by H +. The H + activity will steadily increase, lowering soil pH, if the water soluble calcium in the soil is not increased, or at least maintained.

General Application Recommendations

Nutri-Cal GreenTurf may be applied with conventional ground equipment, suitable power or hose-end sprayers, irrigation systems or by small hand pump sprayers.

Nutri-Cal GreenTurf may be applied alone or included with 32% liquid nitrogen or pesticide program. DO NOT USE WITH PHOSPHATE FERTILIZERS.

Rates

Apply 3-6 gallons Nutri-Cal GreenTurf per acre total for the season. Use higher rates when calcium deficiency is pronounced or in soils where the calcium levels are low.

Apply with enough solution for thorough coverage.

Apply first application in early spring when roots become active. Multiple applications may be made throughout the season.

When applying a new seeding, make an application just after planting. Nutri-Cal GreenTurf will help those new seedlings emerge quicker and with more vigor.

Because of the importance of calcium supplied from the soil, rates and recommendations given on a broad basis are not a guarantee, or necessarily the total solution to each situation. Sound soil management and fertility practices, along with Nutri-Cal GreenTurf as a soluble source of calcium are the keys to profitable turf-grass production, vigorous root development and better germination.

Since weather, soil, and other conditions may vary, the seller makes no warranty of any kind, expressed or implied, concerning the use of this product. The user assumes all risks of use of handling, whether or not he follows directions.

Mixing

Nutri-Cal GreenTurf can be mixed with most other liquid chemicals thus eliminating extra application trips, reducing expenses and soil compaction.

A compatibility test is recommended for each combination before tank mixing. If the combination is not compatible, the solution should become thick, but water should return it to a usable state. Always start with the desired percentage of water in your test container, then add Nutri-Cal GreenTurf and other chemicals to the test solution.

Handling

Precautions similar to those suggested for the most non-toxic chemicals are recommended. Wearing gloves an goggles is also suggested, as is a washing after skin contact.
